Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a large computer network system that usually spans a city or a large campus of the organization. A MAN usually interconnects a number of local area networks (LANs) using a high-capacity backbone technology, such as fiber optical links and provides up-link services to wide area networks (WAN) and the Internet.

Metropolitan Area Network (MANs) are extremely efficient and provide fast communication through high-speed carriers, such as fiber optic cables etc.

A MAN is ideal for many kinds of network users because it is a medium-size network. MANs are used to build networks system with high data connection speeds for cities and towns.

The working mechanism of a MAN is similar to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) but a MAN is not owned by a single organization. Like a WAN, a MAN provides shared network connections to its users. A MAN mostly works on the data link layer which is Layer 2 of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model.

The great example of a MAN is a CATV system that provides Internet and television services (and possibly VoIP) which is reliable working system. The network could be size of an entire town, connecting homes and business through cable. Those homes and businesses would contain small to large (relative) local area networks (wired or wireless) that are connected by equipment to the WAN, which in turn provides an uplink to the Internet or online system.

In cities, MAN links between LANs can be achieved also using microwave or radio wireless communication or if possible by use of infra red laser which can carry data wirelessly over a distance in a straight line usually elevated from the ground where is necessary.
